  • Kodiak is the name of both island and the main city 350 miles south of Anchorage (45-minute flight). The city of Kodiak has a population of approximately 8,000 with the total population of the island around 13,000. A temperate rainforest, the temperature is more mild than central and north Alaska (think pacific northwest). It has a varied and engaging culture with native heritage, thriving fishing industry, and vital Coast Guard presence (largest Coast Guard Base in the world and a Navy Seals training base). Kodiak has an active airport, well-equipped hospital, exceptional school system, and busy business community. Many Alaska cruise ships stop in Kodiak to take advantage of the beautiful scenery, cultural and artistic significance, and with the hopes of sighting the famous Kodiak Brown Bear.

We pride ourselves in Kodiak on our history, our cultures, our geography, our community, and our fish. The second largest island in the United States, Kodiak has been the home of the Alutiiq-Sugpiaq people for over 10,000 years, whose culture, traditions, and practices in natural use and stewardship undergird our community to this day. Kodiak was colonized by Russian traders in the 1700s who brought Russian practices, traditions, and Orthodoxy to the island and carved out the town of Kodiak. After the purchase of Alaska, Kodiak was a mission field for the American Baptist Church, became a tactical lynchpin in the pacific in WWII, and established itself as one of the world's premier commercial fishing ports.

Today Kodiak is a thriving community with strong Alutiiq, Filipino, Coast Guard, and commercial fishing presences. Our outdoor sports and activities are second to none in hiking, fishing, hunting, kayaking, and more. A mission field of ABC since 1893, Kodiakans seek to live an active faith. The transient nature of the Coast Guard and fishing communities provides many opportunities to do just that while also encouraging intentional fellowship in the present.

While friends may come and go in Kodiak, the relationships built here are often built for life.

  • Kodiak is world renowned for its fishing, hunting, hiking, camping and other outdoor adventures. Whether you love to fish in rivers (Salmon, Trout), deep sea (Halibut, Cod, Rockfish and much more) or lakes (Trout), Kodiak is hard to beat. If you are a hunter, deer, elk, mountain goat, bear, and small game hunting is excellent. Around the town of Kodiak are numerous hiking trails, rivers for Kayaking, and beaches to enjoy. While we are on an island, with 70 miles of road system, there’s enough space to drive out of town and camp on the weekend, and if you have access to a boat then there are hundreds of miles of coastline to explore.

  • Kodiak has a diverse and exciting culture. It is community and family oriented with lots of school, community, and family events throughout the year. The Kodiak school system is top quality in academics and offers a full range of extra-curricular activities including all sports. The community has many opportunities for young children including dance, gymnastics, swimming, baseball, soccer and much more. People and families in Kodiak build close relationships and support each other as neighbors, community members, fellow church members and in other ways.

  • Community Baptist Church is an American Baptist Churches USA church in the heart of Kodiak town. It has a rich history of dynamic worship, biblical preaching, discipleship ministry, youth and kids’ ministry and missions. It is a close community of Christ followers who love doing church together and strive to fulfill God’s vision for the church. The church has a beautiful facility and is primed to advance in outreach, community engagement and service.

  • Spacious four-bedroom and two-bathroom Parsonage provided. All utilities paid (including internet). Fully furnished (if needed) and equipped (if needed). Sits a block up from the church and has beautiful view of the bay and the mountains. Easy walking distance to downtown.
